How did Healthy Communities of Pierce County and this Collaborative Summit get started?
In the winter of 2006, a group of visionary physicians from the Pierce County Medical Society started meeting to discuss ways to improve fitness and nutrition in the community. A representative of the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department soon joined them. They formed the Community Health Improvement Initiative, which was later renamed Healthy Communities of Pierce County, a collaborative effort of the two organizations, and hired Dr. Jane Moore as director of community health improvement. Dr. Moore is a family physician with a passion for improving fitness and nutrition from a positive perspective. In the spring of 2007 this group determined to pilot a project in the Gig Harbor-Peninsula area and began networking with others sharing a similar vision including MultiCare Health System, Franciscan Health System, YMCA of Gig Harbor, the City of Gig Harbor, and many others. Interest in and passion for fitness and nutrition were shared by all, yet each one held a different piece of the puzzle. Healthy Communities of Pierce County decided the next step was to bring together at a collaborative summit representatives from all interested constituencies to understand the issues and create collaborative, innovative, community based approaches to improving health. Following this Collaborative Summit, community groups and coalitions will continue to meet with the support and structure provided by Healthy Communities of Pierce County to move forward the work of creating a healthier, fitter community.

The purpose of the Collaborative Summit is to create innovative, collaborative, sustainable action plans. No one person or organization can resolve these types of challenges. Instead lasting solutions involve multiple perspectives and address the systemic nature of the health issues.

What happens at a Collaborative Summit?
Healthy Communities Collaborative Summit brings together the entire community to understand the challenges, to create a shared vision, and to make decisions about how they want to change the community to improve health and fitness. Scientific research provides strong evidence for the effectiveness of community-wide interventions. When community members are involved in decisions, they are invested in the process and the outcomes. The plans that result from the two day summit will have both long and short term goals for regular physical activity and good nutrition throughout the community and will set goals for environmental, institutional and governmental policies.
The meeting process involves a series of activities in small and large groups to explore, dialogue, and plan. The process engages everyone to contribute their perspective and insights. The meeting is also designed to be an example of healthy meetings with nutritious food and physical activity woven into the process.

Why two whole days?
The fitness and nutrition challenges we will be addressing at the Collaborative Summit are serious and complex. The consequences of not addressing these problems are disastrous for our future well being individually and collectively. Challenges of this magnitude are not quickly addressed, but require a deliberate process to explore, understand, vision, and plan. These steps build one upon the other and are positive and engaging. Not only does this problem deserve the complete and sufficient attention of community leaders, but this investment of our time and resources will pay off as together we begin to create a healthier community.
