Welcome to the College of Medical Education
The College of Medical Education was founded in 1975 by local
physicians in cooperation with the University of Puget Sound.
The "College" provided continuing education for the
medical community, including physicians, nurses and EMTs. In
1987, the state eliminated the mandate for nursing education
requirements for state licensing and the College had to find
a new way of doing business.
The Pierce County Medical Society reorganized the College and
provided administrative oversight which continues today. The
College is run by an independent board of directors - 12 Pierce
County Medical Society members appointed by the PCMS Board of
Trustees, three members appointed by the College Board and a
hospital representative appointed by each hospital system in
the county. The PCMS Executive Director serves as Secretary of
the Board and as chief administrator.
Today, the College of Medical Education operates as an independent,
physician-owned and controlled organization that holds category
I accreditation status with the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME) through the Washington State Medical
Association. The College typically offers 8-10 programs each
year including one in Whistler and one in Hawaii every other
year. All other programs are held locally.
The College of Medical Education is proud to offer quality programs
on timely subjects to physicians of Pierce County.
